Salt and the City 2015

11:17

Last Friday (5/29) I was pretty excited about the barcamp Salt and the City, since it is the first I have ever attended.

Being curious I expected a lot of new faces and a shedload of fun. 120 strangers at once, as I saw them I was impressed, how many bloggers from every german-speaking country were there.
It was great that we split up in smaller groups of around 20 people, because in those we could socialise without being overwhelmed by the amount of foreigners.

My group leader was Sonja, one of the most sympathetic teachers I've met so far. First we went through the beautiful Mirabell garden and after that we discovered some really great hidden places in Salzburg. I've never been to our town hall tower, neither under the spinning stage of our theatre until this very day. Also, we tried liquors at Sporer's and went to the amazing Afro Cafe, one of my favorite places to drink iced tea at. You can even get african dishes there.

The "instawalk" ended and we went to 3 different places to eat. I chose to go to the Republic-Cafe, since I knew that they have delicious vegan dishes, such as Qinoa with zucchini, corn, peppers and other vegetables. When I arrived at home I was really tired and went directly to bed.

On Saturday the actual barcamp started. It took place at the Paracelsus Private University, where we first had a extensive breakfast. I enjoyed a bowl of vegan berry cereals (verival) with oat milk and fresh strawberries. After that everyone could attend sessions and 2 workshops.

The first session I attended was about portrait photography. We went for a walk and - unfortunately - did not find the right location to take great pictures.

Afterwards my first Workshop about making Hydrolates took place. It was a bit of a pity, that we couldn't make the Hydrolates by ourselves, but I enjoyed listening, watching, and trying the finished Hydrolates. During trying a cumin Hydrolate my stomach started to growl, it was already 1 pm.

The stomachgrowling increased until I finally got some chickpea salad with pita and falafels. With finishing my lunch, I felt the urge to attend another Session.

This next Session was about digital nomadism/independent travel. I was impressed what a great number of digital nomads already exists. It is interesting to hear about diferent subcultures and lifestyles and after this very first Session the thought of becoming a digital nomad someday was stuck in my head.

At a later time my second Workshop about Photography at the galery "Fotohof" started. A wise photograpgher once said, that the best camera is the one you have with you. So I took pictures with my Smartphone, since my other camera was still laying on my bed, at home. The time at this Workshop passed by really quick and afterwards I went to a Session about Bloggerrelations.

I actually learned a lot, since I just started my blogging-career. Learning about how important a media-kit can be for a blogger, I started planning my own, on my mind. Time flew by and after this very last Session we went to the Trumerei, which is only a few steps from the Uni.

This pub is great for beer lovers, since they have a special beer to every dish they serve.
I enjoyed the asparagus risotto the most and was a little bit disappointed, that the only option for a vegan desert was fruit salad, even though the fruits were fresh and delicious, I would have expected more. All in all the evening was great and before the last course (cheese) came to the table, I left, because I was already tired.

Sunday morning came and with it the anticipation for the final point of the Salt and the City programme. We got into busses and drove to the beautiful Sonnleit'n, where the farmer showed us his land and property. The weather was great and all the tables outside already taken, so we went inside and ordered homemade specialities.
The last stop was the old salt mine of Hallein, a great adventure for families and those who are still young at heart. You can use special slides to go deeper into the mountain or take the stairs, however you prefer. Deep down in the Dürnberg, there is a salt lake with a boat, a light show and music bringing you to the other side. On my way back to Salzburg, my stomach started growling again and I thought, what better way to end this amazing weekend than eating at my favorite restaurant myindigo.

A humongous thank you to Sonja, Claudia, Minnie, Caro and Sabina, who made this barcamp possible!
